Still time to tell us about your self-evacuation situation
Residents of greater Westport are being reminded our quick survey on self-evacuation is closing soon.
The survey, run by West Coast Emergency Management along with Resilient Westport, closes at the end of this week (Friday 7 November 4.30pm).
The survey is seeking information to support the ongoing development of an enhanced flood evacuation plan for Westport, Carters Beach and Snodgrass Road.
Residents are asked three main questions to help gauge their readiness to self-evacuate in a major flood or other emergency. These relate to their access to transport if they needed to evacuate, if they know where they would head to, and if they need additional support (due to health, mobility and/or other challenges).
Manager West Coast Emergency Management Claire Brown says the response so far have been helpful, but Emergency Management would love more residents to take advantage of the last few days to have their say before the survey closes on Friday afternoon.
“We know surveys can be off-putting, we know – but we have truly made this one as quick and simple as it can be. It genuinely only takes a few minutes. If you are a single person, a couple, a family with children or flatmates in shared accommodation providing us with these quick responses helps give us better insight into the evacuation needs of the people of Westport and surrounds. Better information helps us to plan better on your behalf. And when the weather hits the fan, that preparation can make all the difference.
“The other thing, which is equally important, is that this prompts people to think ahead about where they are at, if the worst happens. None of us wants to think about another big flood or emergency but aren’t we all just that bit better off for having done so in advance?”
The survey runs until 4.30pm on Friday 7 November and can be filled out online at letstalk.bullerdc.govt.nz
Paper surveys and information can be found at the Buller District Council Westport service centre or the Sue Thomson Casey Memorial Library in Westport.
